Most of what a household in Bermuda needs is bought online, then shipped. But at checkout the card is refused. Many US and UK merchants use payment companies that do not support a Bermuda billing address, even though the same merchant will ship to the island.
When a card does go through, the processing and currency conversion fees add up. Some shoppers give up on the order. Others ask a friend abroad to buy for them.
Our shopper now buys a gift card for the merchant first, then uses it at checkout. The gift card is paid for up front, so the merchant’s billing check is never the obstacle. The order ships to the island as usual.
She picks the brand in the Bidali app, sees the price in her own currency and pays once.
Orders that used to fail now go through, and she pays less in processing and conversion fees. The couch, the school supplies and the odd birthday gift all arrive without a friend abroad in the middle.
Bermuda is not alone. People across Latin America and other places that payment companies do not support for billing shop online the same way.
“The merchant would ship to me but would not take my card. A gift card fixes that in a minute.”
